Newsletter Fair Politics November 2011

Dear reader,

With this newsletter we like to keep you informed on the work of Fair Politics and recent developments regarding Policy Coherence for Development (PCD) and our policy case studies in particular. Last week CONCORDs new Spotlight report on PCD was launched. Furthermore, we started our new impact study in Rwanda. Besides this, we closely followed developments regarding the new proposal for the EU fisheries policy and on the Economic Partnership Agreements.

Fair Politics goes Rwanda!

Just over a week ago, Fair Politics policy officer Jasper left for Kigali, Rwanda, in order to examine the upcoming extractive industry in Rwanda and to find out how European and Dutch raw materials policies (can) impact on the local development in Rwanda. With this impact study, Fair Politics wants to present the EU concrete recommendations on how to create a more coherent raw materials policy. Jasper will stay in Rwanda for two more weeks. He will report on his progress, findings and experiences on his blog on our website and on the Fair Politics Facebook page. Read more »

CONCORD launches new Spotlight report on PCD

On November 7th CONCORD, the confederation of European development NGOs, launched its second Spotlight report on PCD. The main conclusion of the report is: Europe still fails to take account of the objectives of development cooperation in the policies that it implements and consequently undermines human rights of people in developing countries. After the presentation of the report, a lively discussion took place between NGOs, politicians and policy-makers. Read more »

 

Commission proposes Sustainable Fisheries Agreements

In the light of the current reform of the EUs Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), the European Commission has proposed to transform the current Fisheries Partnership Agreement into Sustainable Fisheries Agreements (SFAs). These SFAs are part of the Commissions aim to make fisheries sustainable world wide. The Coalition for Fair Fisheries Arrangement (CFFA) organized a workshop to discuss the proposal. In the discussion, the Commission, African and European political parties, the fisheries industry and NGOs were represented. Key words were transparency, sustainability and good governance. European Commission sets EPA ultimatum

By the 1st of January 2014, ACP countries that have not yet signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union will lose their beneficial access to the European Market. This has been proposed by the European Commission. Putting pressure on ACP-countries to sign an EPA in its current form may lead to a reverse of development and an increase of poverty in those countries. Read more »
